Repointing a soft historic stack in hard cement mortar is the classic mistake. Cement is stronger and less permeable than the brick around it, so moisture that used to escape through the joints is forced out through the face of the brick instead, and the brick spalls and crumbles. The pointing survives; the stack does not.

Correct repair means lime mortar matched to the original, properly dressed lead rather than mastic, and flaunching renewed in a mix appropriate to the stack’s age. On a listed property, consent may be required before any of it begins.
